As many of you know, I have worked for Wells Fargo for the majority of my professional career. Last year I applied for a company-wide program that awards a number of employees the opportunity to receive paid time off to pursue philanthropic ventures. I was one of two employees nationwide to be awarded a 3 month paid leave of absence to work at Foraged Feast. I will be spending the summer growing the organization, with a goal of raising $25,000 and building a volunteer base that will help sustain the day-to-day operations of the organization.
The Foraged Feast team spent last Sunday at the South Pearl Street farmers market, chatting with locals about the mission and goals of Foraged Feast, recruiting volunteers, and encouraging homeowners to register their fruit trees.
We are one of the wealthiest nations in the world—yet, there are still people in our communities who go to bed every night, and wake up every morning, hungry. We realize that there are larger
Earlier this month, we ventured out to California to meet up with Food Forward, pioneers in urban food recovery and distribution. What we learned over those three days was priceless.
We kicked off the trip at the Food Forward office where Meg and Max showed us around, shared the Food Forward story and imparted their best practices around volunteer management, grant writing, community involvement and so much more. We then had the chance to visit a beautiful citrus farm at Orcutt Orchards in Southern California. It was eye opening how much fresh local fruit is growing in a small area that is feeding thousands of Los Angeles’ underserved.
Did you know that the average apple tree can produce 800-1000 pounds of apples a year? Assuming that an average apple weighs half a pound, a household would have to eat over 4 apples a day, every day, to use up all those apples. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way to share that bounty with the community, instead of throwing away all that unused fruit?
2013 marks Foraged Feast's inaugural year, and we're looking for more than a few good men and women (750 to be exact) to harvest local fruit trees and help with all the good stuff that makes Foraged Feast possible! Join us with your friends, family, or neighbors, and meet some super cool new friends along the way.
Thank you so much to our friends, family and local area businesses that made our fundraising kick-off such a success. The final total of all the donations from our Inaugural Fundraising Event was $3,204! How incredible it that??
